Organic SEO basics

Organic SEO basics

There's a few things I do when starting a website project which I see as the fundamentals when it comes to setting your site up to be optimised for search engines at a basic level. I'll be writing various posts on each one and on more complex SEO techniques but here's what I believe you should start with. Remember there is no definitive right or wrong, this is merely my advice from experience.

Choose your keywords

If you're searching for a "Plumber in London" through Google or other search engines, the "Plumber in London" is what we call a keyword or key phrase. Make sure your content is rich in the keywords and phrases you want to be found with while still keeping it fresh, cohesive and coherent.

Titles and descriptions

When you search for something in Google, the blue link result you see is the page title and the short content underneath is the description. These are vital in how Google ranks certain pages. You need to include your company name, the page name and some keywords of your choice.

SEO

Directory submission

Make sure that as soon as your website goes live link the URL to various directories or databases under the correct category or sub category for your industry. As many relevant ones as you can find.

Social media

Sign up to the relevant social media outlets and get posting and sharing. It's free marketing and should be taken advantage of. Connect the ones you can connect to create autoposting and teach yourself how to use Hootsuite. There you scan schedule posts to various social media sites throughout the week.
