How to promote your business through Instagram
For services that are particularly creative and visual, Instagram is a great way of showing off your business. Designers, artists, photographers all use Instagram to show off their work as well as to show off what they're up to. Businesses use Instagram to let the world know how fun their offices are or what charity work they're up to. Whatever your reason it's important to lock down what's most important when trying to promote your business through social media and in particular today, Instagram.
Balance fun with business
It's great to promote your business but ultimately people want to have fun on Instagram and not be hounded by offers and promotions. People want to see pictures and videos that they enjoy so try and find that balance between fun posts and business posts. Use the 3:1 ratio. Every 3 fun posts, put something up about your business.
Utilise Instagram's video feature
It's the year of the video and Instagram are slowly overtaking Vimeo as the best social media platform for sharing short videos. People would prefer to see a short video than a photograph still so use that preference to your advantage. Add filters to your videos and make them fun and interesting. They'll gain you followers and likes in no time.
Connect with Facebook
Connect your Instagram account to Facebook. Posting to both will increase your chances of reaching a wider audience and the hashtags will be almost as effective on Facebook. People love being visually excited on Facebook too so get your videos and photos on there and save time by linking the accounts.
Use appropriate hashtags
Hashtags help organise and categorise photos and video content, which aids the process of content discovery. Adding appropriate hashtags to posts will group those posts into relevant categories and make it easier for people interested in those categories to find. It's a no brainer. #nobrainer
Chill out - A flexible posting plan
Personally, when I'm on Instagram and my feed is suddenly over taken by four or five posts from the same account I tend to unfollow them. Don't be too strict on yourself. If you miss a day don't panic. As long as your posts are engaging, interesting and relevant to your target audience then you don't have to be posting three or four times a day. Twice a day is more than enough to begin with but don't overload your followers with posts that will inevitably just annoy them.
Finally, one of the most important reasons to use Instagram to help your business grow is to network. Follow, comment and get in touch with influential players in your field. Give them referrals and reach out to them. If you're respected by the big players then you'll get jobs through them. Don't be afraid to ask for help and @ or # them in your posts to show your appreciation.
